| On
April 12th, 2002, the world awoke to the news that Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez had been removed from office and had
been replaced by a new interim government. What had in fact
taken place was the first Latin American coup of the 21st
century, and the world's first media coup...
|
| |
Winner
of over 20 international awards, this fascinating documentary
records the coup attempt against Hugo Chavez, in 2002, supported
by the upper 20% of the economic class in Venezuela and
by the Bush administration. The coup attempt failed two
days later as the nation’s working class took to the
streets and military officers loyal to Chavez restored the
people's elected government. 74 min, 2003

|
Movie Followed by Talks by:
Louise Auerhahn will show slides from her six months
in Venezuela, examining poverty there and how Venezuela’s
poor and working classes are rising up.
Dan
Mayfield, recently returned from a National
Lawyers Guild trip to Venezuela, will talk about Venezuela’s
new Constitution – the first ever to be ratified by
popular vote – and how Venezuelans are developing
a political system that is on the side of the people.

Hugo
Chávez, surrounded by resolute supporters,
makes a dramatic return to power on April 13, 2002
after the collapse of the first Latin American coup
of the 21st century.

HUGO
CHAVEZ, elected President of Venezuela in 1998, is a colorful,
unpredictable folk hero, beloved by his nation's working
class and a tough-as-nails, quixotic opponent to the power
structure that would see him deposed. Two independent filmmakers
were inside the presidential palace on April 11, 2002, when
he was forcibly removed from office. They were also present
48 hours later when, remarkably, he returned to power amid
cheering aides. Their film records what was probably history's
shortest-lived coup d'état. It's a unique document
about political muscle and an extraordinary portrait of
the man The Wall Street Journal credits with making Venezuela
"Washington's biggest Latin American headache after
the old standby, Cuba."
